I am on the eighteenth green. My ball is three foot away from the cup. If I put the ball in the cup, I win $1,000,000. If I don’t, I have to pay the tournament organizer $10,000.
On the practice green, I make the three foot putt, ten our of ten tries. It’s a snap. Sometimes I just tap the ball with my putter in one hand. But now big money is involved. I am nervous. My hands shake.
What should I do? Should I fight my nervous impulse saying, “Don’t be nervous. Don’t shake your hands.” before putting? Or should I accept my nervous impulse and tell myself, “Don’t fight my shaking hand and my nervous head. Instead, direct my focus on putting the ball into the cup.”?
